A STITCH IN TIME SAVES LIVES !

Following Weston Quilter’s successful quilt show in September 2008, they invited the RNLI to their November meeting in order to collect a sizeable cheque.

Over the last 12 months Weston Quilters have been selling raffle tickets in aid of the RNLI.  The most glorious quilt was first prize and the draw was made at the Fifth Biennial Quilt Show at the Winter Gardens.

The RNLI had previously visited Weston Quilters to let them know how they provide a 24-hour lifesaving service around the UK and Republic of Ireland.  Their volunteer crews give up their time and comfort to carry out rescues in difficult and often dangerous conditions.

It had been Weston Quilter’s aim to try to raise £1,000 to cover the training of one volunteer for a year.  They were very proud indeed to hand over a cheque in the sum of £1,553.

UNDER COVER WORK

Recently Weston Quilters invited CLIC Sargent to their meeting to presented with a donation to their Homes from Home Project.

CLIC Sargent were delighted to receive 17 hand-made quilts from Weston Quilters. The treatment for cancer can involve very long stays in hospital. To prevent families being torn apart CLIC Sargent provides Homes from Home. Families stay in Homes from Home for a minimum of a few weeks and can continue to reside there for up to a year, occasionally longer. This support is free of charge to families.

The quilts will be used in three homes in Bristol and our home in Southampton where they will be greatly appreciated by the families. Whilst the accommodation is first rate – there is nothing as welcoming as beautiful hand-made items which add a warm, finishing touch to the rooms.

Weston Quilters were delighted to be of assistance and had a wonderful day workshop to put many of the quilts together.  It has been a very busy year, all in all, and you can see more of the Weston Quilter’s work in their exhibition at the Winter Gardens on 12th – 14th September 2008.

WORKSHOP AT THE FIRS
WORLE, WESTON SUPER MARE

16 JUNE 2007

Weston Quilters organized a workshop on the morning of 16 June 2007 at The Firs Resource Centre in Weston Super Mare.  The workshop was aimed at children and young people with varying special needs.

The Young people used differing textiles and fabric crayons and paint to explore the use of colour and shape.

We welcomed in our young people; Phoebe, Alex, Kayleigh, Laura, Matthew, Lucy, Adam, Kathryn and Zoe.

It was not long before everyone settled in and tried the various techniques no offer.

Karen LP ran the jewellery workshop.  She is showing how to make jewellery with bubble wrap.  This was very popular.

Vicki was running the printing workshop.  Using fabric paint and various stamps made of different materials, the young people experimented on scraps of fabric.

The stamps were of home made foam stamps, cut potatoes (which were not always popular, because of their cold texture !) and shop brought stamps.

Once happy with their technique, the young people proceeded to decorate a bag to take home.

Olga’s felt workshop was also very popular.  It leant itself nicely to all levels of dexterity.  Some ready cut shapes could be put on a back ground and help given to the felting process.

Alternatively the young people could cut out their own shapes and designs to produce their own panel.

Adam shown here was very artistic and produced some amazing pieces of work.

Matthew here is just contemplating the complexities of the sewing machine.  He not only wanted to see what he could put together, but also exactly how the machine worked.

Look out Mark Pickles, he could be after your job!

Jean G is running a workshop using fabric crayons.  Apart from drawing pictures onto the fabric, she also showed the young people how to use resist methods to produce some very pleasing results.

Here is a big smile from Zoe.  Her wheelchair came with its own table, so she didn’t have to compete for space at the tables.  Everything was brought to her.  Didn’t stop her making just as much mess as everyone else though!!

Kayleigh said she enjoyed her day and couldn’t wait for us to come back again.  She took home a bag full of creative ideas.

Everyone was very proud of what they had made at the workshop.  Thank you to all who came along to help on such a wonderful morning.  Much was learnt by all, as well as having fun.

SCHOOL QUILTS

The Schools that have benefited so far have been Bournville Infant School and Corpus Christi Infant Schools, Weston_Super_Mare.

HEARTS CHALLENGE

In the spring of 2003 members made heart blocks on a black background.  These were all put in a lucky dip and each person pulled out as many as they had made.  Over the summer these were made into blocks and shown at the September meeting.  The completed quilts are shown below.
