WESTON SUPER QUILTS 2004

It was Thursday 9 September 2004, a balmy afternoon.  Not necessarily weather wise! Quite a lot of Weston Quilters, and some husbands and partners, assembled at the Winter Gardens to set up the Show.  This in itself was an event, with people who knew what they were doing, instructing us who were new to it all.  But it went smoothly enough and at the end of the day, about six o'clock, all the stands were up, lots of the quilts were hung, and the wonderful staff at the Winter Gardens were on the largest step ladders I have ever seen, hanging the bigger quilts on the walls.  Brave young men indeed!

At eight-thirty on Friday morning we were back in the Hall to finish tidying, making ready for the onslaught, or so we hoped. In fact a steady trickle of folk came in all day, chatting, admiring, and generally enjoying themselves. The children from the schools who came to see their quilts with Mums and Dads were very excited, and the parents were obviously astonished at the quality of the work exhibited by their under sixteens. One of my best moments at the show was seeing the face of an exhibitor who had been awarded a Rosette. She looked at her husband, pink and open-mouthed and then was rather tearful, but so happy. In fact her quilt was the favourite of the public too, so at the end of the Show she was extremely thrilled.  Some cried, and a lot laughed. There was much chatting to people from far and wide.

The workshops were very popular and certainly many people went away determined to start making something. Maybe in 2006 we shall have lots of new entrants! The quilts were lovely, but I shall let the experts write of them. I felt the atmosphere in the hall and bar, and the buzz of the traders who were friendly, all added to what was a most marvellous weekend. After the presentations on Sunday afternoon, the show was efficiently and speedily dismantled, the frames to be put away until 2006 and the participants to get their needles going again for the next time! Everyone worked very hard but had had a very enjoyable weekend.
