Weston Super Quilts 200812th TO 14th SEPTEMBERWith over 160 quilts on display, this exhibition, with wall to wall quilts, was a visual feast. This show is run by the members of Weston Quilters and as you enter the hall the impact is amazing, with quilts hanging from all the walls and neatly lined up along the centre. Like all good feasts it is the range and variety that makes it so appealing. The individual styles and levels of experience among the quilt makers means that there is something for everyone. It is an opportunity for the experienced to wow us with the fantastic and leave us thinking ‘how do I do that?’ followed by the next quilt which gets the juices flowing and the thoughts of ‘I’m going straight home to try that!’ But also the more inexperienced can show off and say ‘Look, I did it! This is what I can do!’ Weston Super Quilts is a show for everyone and we invite all levels of experience to take part. In 2008 we had our usual categories of Traditional, Children’s and Beginners/Novice quilts, but with specialist categories of Mystic East, All Our Yesterdays, Inspiration from Poetry and Music, Water – An Interpretation and our feature category, Charles Darwin. The 200th anniversary of his birth was due at the beginning of 2009 and we wanted to celebrate along with him. The Winter Gardens in Weston Super Mare provides an excellent venue for the quilts, which are hung beautifully on especially made frames and also along the walls of the Prince Consort Room. Set in our wonderful seaside town, it is easily accessible by road and rail and the town offers other attractions such as shopping, restaurants and theatre and film experiences and of course not forgetting the beach and pier. The whole experience is most rewarding, with Weston Quilters being a friendly bunch and offering various trade stalls, raffle quilt and charity stands. 2008 also saw our first year of full day workshops, which went down a storm. Please take a visual trip through our show, and don’t forget to come along in 2010 – why not enter your own quilt. You can find the entry form on the Weston Super Quilts 2010.
